ASEAN NHRI Forum to meet with High Level Panel PDF Print E-mail

The ASEAN NHRI Forum will participate in the dialogue between the High Level Panel (HLP) on the drafting of the Terms of Reference (TOR) for an ASEAN Human Rights Body and Relevant Stakeholders on 20 March 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The ASEAN NHRI Forum will present its collective stand on proposals for inclusion in the TOR for an ASEAN Human Rights Body being drafted by the HLP.

The HLP has agreed to meet with the ASEAN NHRI Forum as well as with the Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, Solidarity for Asia People's Advocacy, and Women's Caucus on ASEAN Human Rights Body altogether in one session from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Prior to this Consultation, the NHRIs will attend a coordination meeting with the three other major stakeholders to share the common pressing points to further the establishment process of the ASEAN Human Rights Body.

The four NHRIs are advocating for the creation of an ASEAN Human Rights Commission with a mandate to perform functions on protection, promotion and monitoring human rights in the region.

 
Consultation Workshop of Technical Staff in the Philippines PDF Print E-mail

ANF technical staff with Mr. Egger Topper (seated)The technical staff of the Human Rights Commissions of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand attended the two-day Consultation Workshop on 5-6 March 2009 at the Conference Room of the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines. It was an opportunity for the technical staff to firm up the action plan as well as integrate other activities relative to the creation of the ASEAN Human Rights Body (AHRB).

The Workshop invited representatives from the Working Group for the Establishment of an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism to participate in the discussions as well as agree on activities where the ASEAN NHRI Forum (ANF) could participate and extend its efforts for the realization of the AHRB.

Moreover, the Workshop welcomed the participation of an external monitor from the European Commission, Mr. Egger Topper, who provided comments and directions for the ANF to undertake in order to succeed in its endeavors.

 
ASEAN NHRI Forum to hold 5th Consultative Meeting in Bangkok PDF Print E-mail

The Human Rights Commissions of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand will convene in Bangkok, Thailand on 20-22 January 2009 for their 5th Annual Consultative Meeting. The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand will host the meeting and the agenda of the meeting focuses on the updates, best practices, and future endeavors of the ASEAN NHRI Forum.

Komnas HAM Chairs ASEAN NHRI Forum PDF Print E-mail

At the conclusion of the 5th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN NHRI Forum in Bangkok, Thailand last 20-22 January 2009, Commissioner Khunying (Lady) Ambhorn Meesook officially turned over the chairmanship to the National Commission on Human Rights of Indonesia, or Komnas HAM. This is in keeping with the agreement to continue the rotation of chairmanship for the annual meetings and to follow the ASEAN practice of using the alphabetical order of nations.

Komnas HAM will host the 6th Annual Meeting scheduled in November 2009, as well as the preparatory and Technical Working Group Meetings this year.

 
ASEAN Four NHRIs Joins 4th RTD on Human Rights PDF Print E-mail

The National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand participated in the Fourth Roundtable Discussion (RTD) on Human Rights in ASEAN: Realizing the People-Oriented ASEAN Community with Human Rights on 20-21 November 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand.
