The Human Rights Commissions of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand, in association with the Provedor of Timor Leste, issued a Joint Statement in response to the perilous human rights situation in Myanmar at the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in Sydney, Australia last 24-27 September 2007.
In their statement, they condemned the Burmese military junta's repulsive and undesirable crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Rangoon. The violent response to peaceful demonstrations was highly criticized, thus, they are urging the government of Myanmar to strictly abide by the basic principles, norms and standards of human rights as well as the rule of law. Furthermore, they are encouraging ASEAN governments to take their stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar.
